Were you always planning to be a Financial Advisor and why?

I started my financial career in 1994 with one of the largest financial companies in RSA. I chose to specialize in short term insurance as the need for this type of insurance become very relevant in our country. I like to work with people and assist them in understanding their insurance needs.

When meeting with clients do they mostly come to your own premises or do you mostly go their theirs?

I mostly go to my clients.

Email, Phone, Face to Face, WhatsApp

Yes

What do you love most about being a financial advisor

To assist the client in helping them to understand what their insurance needs are and introducing them to the various products I can offer.

Would you recommend becoming a financial advisor as a career for school-leavers, and why?

Yes, to be a financial advisor is a professional career with lots of opportunities to specialize in various nice products. You can choose your own field of specialization ie. Transport, aviation, hospitality and leisure etc. A financial advisor can work till age 70 should you so wish, there is no age limitations as long as you are relevant in the market and are Fit and Proper to be a financial advisor.

What qualities should South Africans be looking for in their financial advisor?

Honesty, integrity, professional conduct, reliable, well spoken, well mannered, good communication skills, positive attitude.

What is the biggest challenge facing financial advisors today?

Existing economic outlook in South Africa, low credit rating, political situation which contributes to low morale among South Africans.

What aspects of financial advising do you focus on most?

Commercial and personal insurance focusing on higher net worth of clients.

Describe your average client

Established individual, fixed assets, owner of a business or entrepreneurs in their field of expertise.

How far away from your premises is your furthest client?

Cape Town

From your financial advising experience, if you could cite one of the biggest reasons financial goals, what would it be?

High inflation, no job opportunities, political uncertainty, lack of understanding and planning from South Africans regarding their own wealth creation.

What financial software do you like best?

Working on various company software.

What other software, online services or apps do you use?

Mailchimp, Dropbox

Do you think the coming wave of automation in the next few years will steal some financial advisor jobs and why/why not?

Not really, the need will always be their for a financial advisor. Clients wants to build a relationship with a person which understands their insurance needs and to be the ‘go to’ person in a crisis situation.

What is your opinion on Bitcoin?

It is the way to go if you have the money to pay for a bitcoin!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Gardening, reading, walking, spending time with my family.

What is the most interesting thing on your bucket list?

To tour the world!
